Lopes bench cheers

The Lamar Community College women's basketball team opened fall competition with two wins and one loss this week, setting the pace for the 2017-2018 season.

The Lopes starting the week and their season off with a decisive 98-48 win over the Adams State University JV team on Wednesday, November 1.

LCC started strong offensively, scoring 22 points in the first quarter and 27 in the second, giving the team a strong 30 point lead at the half. They were able to build on this lead after the break, winning their first game by a score of 98-48.

Freshman Kelyn Moses led the team with 18 points off of strong drives to the basket.  Sophomores Sam Caruth and Iva Belosevic both contributed to the Lopes' win, Caruth with sixteen points, largely from three-point shooting, and Belosevic with twelve points and twelve rebounds.

On Friday, the ladies traveled to Garden City, Kansas, for the Garden City Classic.

LCC faced the Kansas Wesleyan University JV team first, and used the game to better themselves offensively and defensively. They outscored Kansas Wesleyan in three straight quarters, building to an 86-48 final score.

Caruth and Belosevic led the Lopes in scoring with 33 and 19 points, respectively.  Belosevic also chipped in ten rebounds.

LCC then took on host team Garden City Community College on Saturday.

The Lopes started slow, allowing the Garden City team a twelve-point lead at the half. LCC's starting five picked up the pieces and started putting up some points in the fourth quarter, outscoring GCCC by 16 points, but it was too little, too late. The Lopes took their first loss of the season, 58-53.

Moses led the team in scoring with 20 points. Belosevic contributed eleven points and ten rebounds.

Next on the Lopes' schedule is Hutchinson Community College. The LCC team will travel to Kansas on November 7.
