Softball 3-3 on conference road trip
The Lamar Community College softball team went 3-3 during a six-game road trip between La Junta, Colorado, and McCook, Nebraska. The Lopes took one from Otero Junior College on April 6 and two from McCook Community College on April 9.
Thursday, April 6
In a midweek match up against OJC, the Runnin' Lopes were able to take one from the Rattlers, wining 11-3 the first game and falling 12-11 the second. On the day, LCC recorded six home runs and 22 hits, including a grand slam by sophomore Kelsee Bushell. Mercedes Salazar, Mariah Lopez and Desiree Ramirez also hit home runs. Despite the hot bats, LCC was unable to take two from OJC, with six errors in the second game to give the Rattlers the victory.
Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9
The Lamar Community College softball team split this weekend in a four-game series against McCook. On Saturday, the Runnin' Lopes lost 11-3 and 9-1 in the regional match up. LCC was unable to get the bats going and had only 11 hits on the day. Freshman Mackenzie Rowlett drove in three runs in the first game while freshman Caitlin McCarthy recorded the lone RBI of the second game.
On Sunday, the Runnin' Lopes came out swinging and defeated the Indians 12-4 in the first game. Bushell, Salazar and Shaelyn Bachini all hit home runs to help LCC to the victory. Freshman, Samantha McDonald also went 3-for-4 at the plate and recorded two RBI. In the second match up of the day, the Runnin' Lopes went nine innings with MCC before finally winning 7-6. In the top of the ninth inning with a 6-6 score, Salazar led off with a double and two walks by Bachini and Larissa Royer. With the bases loaded, freshman Makayla Whitley pinch-hit for the Lopes and was able to push the leading run across. Lauren Reed then smacked her second double of the day driving in another run and McDonald followed with a single to give the LCC a three-run lead. McCook responded with a two-run homerun at the bottom of the inning but was unable to cut the lead further, giving LCC the victory.
