Lady Lopes Start Season on the Road

The 2016 Runnin' Lopes Softball team had a good start to their season this last weekend at the Midland Classic softball tournament in Midland, Texas.  LCC went 2-3, defeating Vernon College 12-8 and Clarendon College 11-7.  Despite coming up short versus Luna Community College (8-9), Odessa College (2-19), and Midland College (2-18), the Runnin' Lopes offense scored a total of 35 runs for the weekend with a team batting average of .378.

The strong offensive performance was led by sophomore Briana Medina-Martinez and freshman Jerhen Montez, both batting over .600 for the weekend.  Freshman Kelsee Bushell and Bailey Douglas also hit two homeruns each in their college debut, contributing to the Lopes seven total homeruns for the weekend.

Sophomore pitcher Stevie Wadsworth led the LCC pitching staff with two wins and a loss.  Sophomore Aliyssa Parson and freshman Malea Orozco also received time in the circle but came up short recording one loss each for the weekend.

"Of course we would have liked to win all 5 games, but I am very happy with the production of our offense and our pitching staff. Defensive mistakes cost us the game against Luna, but the girls understand what we need to do to improve our fielding so we can win the close games," said LCC Head Coach Kristen Silva.  "We play Luna again this upcoming weekend and are looking forward to having a second chance against them to pull out some wins."

The Lady Lopes will face Luna Community College again on Friday and Saturday, February 19-20, in a four-game series at home.  The games start at 2:00pm on Friday and noon on Saturday at Citizens' Field.
