Penovich leads Lopes Golf to third place finish

The Lamar Community College golf team competed this past weekend at Otero Junior College, seeing marked improvement and finishing in third place overall. 

At the tournament held in La Junta, Colorado, on October 10-11 the players enjoyed nice weather on Thursday with a degree of 76, followed by 68 degree weather and 5mph winds on Friday.

LCC's Joey Penovich led the Lopes team with a fifth place finish in the tournament. His two-day score of 145 (71-74) was only nine strokes behind the top competitor, Trey Massey of Eastern Wyoming College.

Robert Heiny (70-78) and Cesar Shinall (74-74) tied with two others for a sixth place finish with a two-day score of 148.

Kyle Colen with score of 153 (77-76), and Geoffrey Kozlowski with a 168 (87-81).

The Lopes' third place finish shows solid improvement on the season.  The LCC team finished with a two-day total of 594 (+34).   

McCook Community College won the tournament with a team score of 580 (+20) with Eastern Wyoming College coming in a close second with 582 (+22). Northeastern Junior College tied with Central Wyoming for fourth place with 605 (+45), and Otero Junior College took sixth with 608 (+48).

Lopes Golf will return home to host their fall tournament this Thursday and Friday, October 12-13, at the Spreading Antlers Golf Course in Lamar.
