Lopes Volleyball Wraps Up Tournament Play

The Lamar Community College Volleyball team traveled to Liberal, Kansas, this past weekend for their final tournament before region play starts. The Lady Lopes played two teams from Kansas, one from Texas, and rival Otero Junior College. The Lady Lopes went 3-1 on the weekend, losing to host school Seward County and beating Clarendon, Butler, and Otero.

The team started the weekend off strong with two wins on Friday, due in large part to their strong control of the net.  In the match against Clarendon, the team played hard early and met little resistance in the three set win.  In their match against Butler, the Lopes fought hard with two come-from-behind extra point sets to win in four.  They had to overcome their worst serving outing all season with twelve serving errors.

In the first game on Saturday, the team was plagued with serving and serve receiving errors resulting in a three set loss to Seward.

In the final match of the tournament, the Lopes took on their rival Otero Junior College.  The Lopes won the first two sets 25-20 and 27-25, followed by Otero taking the next two sets 25-22 and 25-22.  The Lady Lopes came out on fire in the final set, going 8-0 at the turn.  LCC and OJC then started trading points back and forth until the Lopes regained control and won 15-9.  The team saw a season high in blocks in the final match with 18.

LCC had two players on the all-tournament team: Karina Grajeda and Tanaia Hansen.
