Lady Lopes Conclude First Half of Season

The Lamar CC Lady Lopes Women's Basketball program completed their first half of the season this past weekend at the Howard College Thanksgiving Classic in Big Spring, TX.  Through 15 games, LCC sits with a record of 5-10 overall.  The Lady Lopes had quite a month of November, as all 15 games were played in that month.  With so many games so early, new head coach Kellen Fernetti had to not only implement a new system, but implement the system with 9 freshmen on the roster, and only two returners from last season.  Alison Kulesza is the only member of LCC that saw game action last year. 

"We knew in the fall how important it was to have our conditioning in order, and to get our system down as much as we could entering November.  With 15 games in 30 days, we had to make sure we were physically and mentally ready to go in November.  Practice time was crucial on the days in between games to make sure we were getting some rest, but to also work on what we needed to work on," Fernetti said. 

LCC is led in scoring by sophomore Kiana Walker, who is averaging 14ppg on the season.  Freshman Angie Lopez leads the Lady Lopes in rebounding with 7rpg, and freshman Graison Moseley is the top assist leader with an average of 4.2apg.  As a team, LCC is averaging 64ppg, shooting 37% overall from the field, 29% from the three point line, and 63% from the free throw line.  LCC is also getting 14 assists per game. 

LCC will resume their season on January 4th with their first practice session of the 2nd half of the season.  LCC will host Iowa Western on January 7th and travel to Frank Phillips January 11 to conclude the first week back in action.  Region IX play will begin January 14 with Otero Junior College coming to LCC and on the 17th Trinidad State Junior College will travel to LCC. 

"I am excited for the second half of our season.  The girls saw some good competition in the first half of the season, played different styles of play, and learned a lot not only about themselves but learned a lot about our team.  We competed well overall, and I believe our scheduled in the first half has prepared us for the always tough Region IX South schedule," Fernetti stated.
