Furious Comeback Falls Just Short

For twenty-seven minutes of the game vs Trinidad State on Friday, the Lamar Community College Lopes women's basketball team could not find their footing on defense or offense. However, the last thirteen minutes were a different game, as the Runnin' Lopes woke up and went on a 41-20 run falling just short, 74-68, running their losing streak to three games.

LCC came out of the gates struggling, hitting on only three of their first twenty shots and trailing the Trojans, 15-9 after the first. The second quarter was much the same story as Trinidad outscored Lamar, 20-10 to carry a 35-19 lead to the break. For the half, LCC shot 8-36 (22%), including 2-13 from three while Trinidad hit 15-30 (50%).

The third quarter was a continuation of the struggle as Trinidad scored the first five points of the half on seven offensive rebounds, before a five in, five out sub by Lamar attempted to right the ship with TSJC leading 40-19. The lead would continue to expand, getting to a game high of 27 with 3:49 to go on a Trojan layup and a lead of 54-27.

Over the final 3:47, a 15-2 run by Lamar led by 11 points combined by Sophia Trujillo and Yazmeen Henderson. At the end of three it would stand 58-44, Trinidad leading. The run continued into the fourth, as the Running' Lopes scored the twelve of the first fourteen to cut the lead to 60-56 with 7:02 remaining on an Althea Angles jumper.

The lead would stay between four and six over the next three minutes, before a free-throw by Trujillo cut the lead to three with just thirty-nine seconds remaining. This would be as close as the Lopes could get as a turnover and a three point miss ended their hopes.

For Lamar, Angeles led with a game high 19 points, while Kya Gastineau and Trujillo added 10 each. Tayler Dossey led the way with 10 rebounds, while Angeles added five assists. For Trinidad State, Maria Llorente led with 17 points and six assists.

The Lopes are in action next on Tuesday when they play host to North Platte Community College in a non-Region South matchup. The game is slated for a 5:00 pm start.
