Women's Basketball Lose to Over Weekend

The Lamar Community College women's basketball team played host to two Region 9 South teams this weekend. On Friday night they played host to 13th ranked Western Nebraska Community College, falling 96-49, and hosting Northeastern Junior College in a rematch from earlier in the year, falling 57-53.

On Friday, the Lopes played WNCC tough for most the first quarter, before a run late gave them a 20-12 lead after the first. They would cut into the lead slightly in the second but would find themselves trailing 42-22 at half. The Cougars would proceed to expand the lead in the third by nine, and would win the fourth in route to the win.

For Lamar, Jada Dupree led the way with 14 points, while Althea Angeles added 10. Angeles also led with seven rebounds, and Dupree with three assists. For WNCC, Alejah Douglas led all scorers with 21 points, as well as nine rebounds.

On Saturday, the Lopes jumped out to a lead in the first quarter and played well for most the first half, leading by 20 midway thru the second quarter before a 7-0 run cut the lead to 13 at halftime, 37-24. The second half proved to be a completely different half as the Lope offense sputtered in the third and fourth quarters only scoring 16 in the second half, while on the defensive side the Plainswomen gathered 12 offensive boards, eventually taking the lead with around 3:00 to go in the game. Overall the offensive rebounds ended up being the main culprit, as NJC outscored Lamar 14-2 on second chance points.

The only double digit scorer for Lamar was Angeles with 20. For Northeastern, Filippa Goula led three double digit scorers with 15 points.

"I felt like both days we played hard for most the game, but again a spurt offensively where we can't get anything going and offensive rebounds proved to be our unraveling. If we can fix the rebounding issue, we will start to win some of these close game." Colvin remarked after the game.

The Lopes are now 3-9 on the year, and will play three games this week. Travelling to Trinidad Junior College on Tuesday, to Frank Phillips College on Friday, and hosting Air Force Prep on Saturday.
