Women's Basketball Falls at Northeastern Classic

Althea Ageles

Friday evening, the Lamar Community College women's basketball team knew they would have a tall order ahead as they faced off with undefeated and NJCAA 11th ranked Casper College. They played Casper tight jumping out 9-2 early, and trailing by only 14 midway thru the third period before a 21-3 run helped put them away, 101-53.

For the Lopes, Tayler Dossey and Jada Dupree led the way with 9 points, while Dossey also led with six rebounds. Dupree led the way with three assists. The Lopes struggled from the field hitting 18-62 overall and just 5-17 from three, including 0-6 in the second half. Leading Casper was Marija Bakic with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

On Saturday afternoon, the Lopes faced off with Region 9 South foe, Northeastern Junior College in a rare non-region match. Lamar erased a 56-51 third quarter deficit to take the lead twice in the fourth before offensive rebounds was their undoing in a 75-68 loss. There were six ties and 11 lead changes overall in the game.

Leading the way for LCC was Althea Angeles with a solid game of 17 points, five assists, zero turnovers, and three rebounds. Sophia Trujillo had a career high, 15 points hitting four of five from three, while the final double digit scorer was Dupree with 10. Angie Lopez led the team with nine rebounds. The Lopes did a good job all weekend taking care of the ball, with 10 turnovers vs Casper and only eight vs the Plainswomen. For NJC, Brionna McBride led all scorers with 28.

"I thought we did a lot of nice things this weekend, and thought we played hard both days. I didn't feel like we came out ready to go on Saturday but picked it up as the game went on. In the end we gave up to many offensive boards vs both teams and it is something I have to find a way to fix." Coach Colvin had to say regarding the weekend.

The losses make three in a row for the Lopes, who fell to 2-3 on the year. They are next in action on Friday when they host Colorado Ballers, a team from the Air Force base in Colorado Springs. It will be game one of a men/women double header starting at 5:00 pm.
