Lady Lopes Sweep Opening Weekend

Riverton, WY – Going into this past weekend, head women's basketball coach, Brandon Colvin did not know what to expect out of his young team after two scrimmages but knew that it was just going to be good to finally play for real. By noon, Saturday he got his answer as the Lopes knocked off Western Wyoming Community College 71-51, to go 2-0 on the weekend after defeating classic hosts, Central Wyoming 48-40 on Friday night.

Friday night's contest with the hosts from Central Wyoming was a defensive battle as neither team's offense could get anything going. There were only 18 total points scored in the first quarter, with the teams knotted at nine each. The Lopes outscored the Rustlers by one to go into the half up 24-23. There were five lead changes and three ties.

The second half was much the same as both teams again scored nine points, leaving Lamar up 33-32 after three quarters. In the fourth the Lopes found some rhythm again scoring 15 and using a 7-0 run late in the fourth to secure the win, 48-40.

Jada Dupree and Tayler Dossey led the way with 10 points each, while Dossey also added six rebounds. Angie Lopez led the way with nine rebounds, while Althea Angeles and Vivian Castro each gained three assists. Maile Williams led Central Wyoming with 13 points. For the game Lamar shot 37% while CWC was held to 24% overall. Lamar also won the boards by a 41-30 tally.

In a game that had an early start of 10:00 am it was again a back and forth effort as LCC knocked off Western Wyoming Community College 71-51. The first half saw numerous lead changes before LCC seemed to take control grabbing a 27-19 lead with 3:19 to go. After a timeout though, Western Wyoming went on a 7-0 run of their own too 27-26. At halftime it would be a 30-28 lead for the Lopes.

Lamar would extend the lead in the third quarter by virtue of a 15-12 quarter, to go up 45-40. The Lope bench came in huge in the fourth, starting the quarter by scoring the first six points, as Lamar was able to go on an extended run and expand the lead to 22 before settling on a 20 point win.

Dupree had another solid game with 18 points, going 7-10 from the field and 3-5 from three. She also added four steals. Angeles and Mai Le Waters both added 12 off the bench, with Angeles also adding six assists. Lopez had her second game leading the way in rebounds with 12, while Kya Gastineau added eight.

The Lopes are next in action on Tuesday evening when they play host to Frank Phillips College out of Borger, TX. The game will not be allowing outside spectators but will be livestreamed on the LCC Athletics YouTube page.
