Lopes pick up back-to-back wins on the road

The Lamar Community College women's basketball team won back-to-back games on the road this past weekend.  The Lopes overcame Eastern Wyoming College on January 13 by a score of 72-69 and continued their winning ways the next day by beating Western Nebraska Community College 64-58.

On Friday, January 13, the Lopes started their road trip in Torrington, Wyoming, to take on Eastern Wyoming College.

The Lopes started the game well, getting 19 points in the first corner compared to EWC's eight; they went into the break strong, leading 41-29 at the half.  LCC came back slow after the break, allowing their opponent to outscore them by 12 points, but the Lopes were able to come back and pick up the close game, topping EWC 72-69.

Leading the team in this win was Claudia del Moral Garcia who picked up 18 points for the Lopes off the bench.  Kiara Budd chipped in 15 points and five rebounds, and TiAna Davila shot an impressive was 100% from the field to get 11 points, nine of which came from behind the arc.  Damilola Balogun finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

LCC then went on to Western Nebraska on January 14, picking up another win.

The Lopes started out slow in the first quarter, scoring only nine points to WNCC's 16.  LCC was able to cut that lead in the second quarter, trailing by just five points and going into the half with a score of 26-31.  LCC was able to come back strong after the game, outscore the WNCC team, and pick up a 64-59 win.

Garcia once again led the Lopes offense and was responsible for nearly a third of the team's points with 20 and picking up six rebounds and two steals along the way.  Balogun was big on the boards for LCC, with eight rebounds and knocking in 11 points.  Davila added another ten points, while Shelby Hawkins picked up nine rebounds for the team.

The Lopes are currently undefeated in the league and stand at 9-10 on the season.
