Lopes fall to Laramie County

The Lamar Community College women had a tough rival game over the weekend, playing Laramie County Community College right here at home. Despite the efforts of Claudia Del Moral Garcia in scoring and Damilola Balogun cleaning up the boards, the Lopes took their first league lost with the score 57-62.

The Lopes started out slow, missing their first four shot attempts while the Golden Eagles quickly took the lead.  The Lopes started a bit late but, after a quick time out, they were able to get things rolling. The team finished the first quarter down by just five points, 11-16.

The game had an instant spark as soon as Garcia came in off the bench for the Lopes and simply took over the show, scoring right away after a beautiful cross over move.  She kept scoring, even hitting a half-court buzzer beater to bring the Lopes within one of Laramie County.

In the final moments of the game, the Lopes had a chance to win by taking the lead with only a minute to go.  An unfortunate technical foul was called on top of a shooting foul and the Golden Eagles took full advantage and gaining a three-point lead.  The Lopes battled hard but could not regain the lead.

The night's top performance went to Garcia who finished with 17 points, seven assists and four steals, while Balogun finished with eight points and ten rebounds.  Other contributors for the Lopes included  Ann-Kathrin Schaetzle with ten points and three rebounds, Kiara Budd and Edina Krusko each with 6 points, and Tiana Davila with seven points.

The Lopes look to next Friday, January 27, to get back on track as they take on rival Otero Junior College at 5:00pm in the LCC Wellness Center. The men's game will follow at 7:00pm.
