Lope Golf finishes fourth in Sterling

Josh Lovett

The Lamar Community College golf team competed this past weekend at Northeastern Junior College, including three top-ten individual finishes from Josh Lovett, Facundo Boero and Jeremy Minnick.

The two-day tournament was held in Sterling, Colorado, on April 12-13.  The spring weather cooperated for the tournament, with mostly fair conditions and some wind.  Wednesday had stronger winds, up to 14 mph, but it calmed down for play on Thursday.

Lovett led the Lopes team, finishing the tournament tied for fifth place.  His two-day total for the tourney was 148 (75-73), just six strokes behind first place.  Boero finished just one stroke behind his teammate with 149 (78-71), putting him in sixth place. Minnick came in at tenth place with a score of 158 (87-71).  Austin Matheny finished with 178 (92-86).

With this week's individual results, LCC has three players ranked in the top ten in the region.  Minnick currently sits in fourth place, which he maintained from the fall standings.  Boero improved from eleventh place in the fall to his current sixth-place position.  Lovett follows close behind in ninth place in the region, improving from 14th in the fall.

The Lopes finished in fourth place as a team with a two-day total of 633 (+57).

Eastern Wyoming College won the tournament with a team score of 583, followed by Otero Junior College (610) and McCook (612).  Central Wyoming took fifth (651) and Northeastern Junior College took sixth (666).

The Lopes will continue the spring schedule with travel to Eastern Wyoming College on April 20-21.
