LCC’s Boero wins top individual at home tournament

Facundo Boero

Sophomore Facundo Boero took the top spot and led the Lamar Community College Golf team to a third place finish in the team's home tournament this past weekend.

The Lopes hosted Eastern Wyoming College, McCook Community College, Otero Junior College, Northeastern Junior College and Central Wyoming College, on Thursday and Friday, March 30-31, at the Spreading Antlers Golf Course.

The tournament saw near perfect weather on Thursday, but conditions on Friday were very difficult.  Golfers only played nine holes on Friday as they were faced with 20 mph winds and a wind chill of about 28 degrees.

At the end of play on Thursday, Boero trailed the individual leader, Harry Walch, by one stroke.  However, he was able to power through the poor weather on Friday to finish just ahead of Walch and steal the top spot.

Boero earned his first-place individual finish with a 27-hole total score of 104 (67-37).  LCC's Josh Lovett wasn't too far behind with 109 (74-35) and finishing in fourth place. Teammates Jeremy Minnick and Austin Matheny finished with scores of 119 (77-42) and 136 (95-41), respectively.

As a team, LCC finished in third place with a score of 468 (-92), only three strokes behind second place McCook Community College (465).  Eastern Wyoming College took top honors for the day with a score of 447.  Otero Junior college finished fourth (470), followed by Central Wyoming College (481) and Northeastern Junior College (526).

The Runnin' Lopes Golf team travels to next to McCook Community College on April 6-7.
